Choosing to follow Jesus is an adventure and privilege all in one. You would think that once a person makes a decision to follow Jesus. People would seek and discipline themselves to obey him in all the areas of their life (sanctification). l am not talking about being perfect. I am talking about being purposeful with letting God work in you. The Bible is the story of God reaching out to humanity. God himself inspires every Book, chapter, and verse. Remember God is not complicated, we are.
To be a Christian is by definition the decision to follow Jesus footprints. Sadly, this is not the case. Many people that consider themselves Christian do not actually live, practice or even believe everything the bible says. They choose only what they agree with; they treat the bible like the buffet line. What I feel like eating today, they ask themselves. Ignoring the items, they know they do not like.
The sad part is that they do not even realize that the bible is like a spider web. Everything in the word of God is interconnected. Look at it like a cooking recipe for a wedding cake. If you change or take out just one ingredient, you can end up with something that no longer tastes or looks good, you will still have a cake but not the one that is supposed to be.
I understand that the Bible can seem confusing and intimidate at times. Everything that you do for the first time can seem confusing and intimidating. The first time you got behind the wheel of a car, you were super nervous; you only became confident once you practiced driving. The word of God is the same. As you read and practice/apply God’s word, everything becomes easier to understand.
I want to give you a quick overview of how to study the bible. This will help some of us to understand it better. This is hermeneutics 101, the art of studying the bible. The books in the bible are broken down into five sections. When you read them, keep in mind the following:
Historical Book = We learn life lessons from the characters
Poetry & Wisdom = God’s advice for daily living
Doctrine books = Put extra emphasis on everything Jesus says
Prophecy: Faith builders. Prophecies given thousands of year before they happen.
Law books: Covenant applies mainly to the Hebrew People
